Eclipse Logo The Eclipse developers have announced the release of the fifth milestone (M5) for Eclipse 3.6, the first section of the next release train called Helios, named after the Greek god of the Sun. Building on previous releases, Eclipse 3.6 M5 includes several bug fixes, changes and new features.

The latest development milestone allows users to open a file directly from the command line, adds support for keyword searching in wizards and updates the Print dialogue so that it remembers a users selected options until the workbench is shut down. Patches can now be compared and applied using the Synchronise view, and the Apply Patch wizard lets users enter URLs instead of selecting a patch using the clipboard or file browser. Other changes include XULRunner 1.9.2 support in the Browser widget and, like the Variables view, the Expressions view can now display data in a columns format.

Two more milestone releases are scheduled up to May of 2010, followed by four release candidates. The final version of Eclipse 3.6 is expected to be released on the 23rd of June, 2010. The development of Eclipse 3.6 is taking place at the same time as development for Eclipse 4, with the development project referred to as Eclipse e4. Eclipse 4, which is being built on top of version 3.6, will be the "next generation" of the Java development environment that will incorporate several familiar web technologies and reportedly put them to new uses. The latest development version of Eclipse e4, version 1.0 Milestone 3, was released on the 14th of January.

More details about the release can be found the the New and Noteworthy page and in the build notes. Eclipse 3.6 Milestone 5 is available to download from the Eclipse web page and is released under the Eclipse Foundation Software User Agreement.
