Helios: Eclipse 3.6 Milestone 2 released

Developer Ian Bull has announced the availability of the second milestone for Eclipse 3.6, the first section of the next release train called Helios, named after the ancient Greek Sun god. Five additional milestone releases are scheduled up to May of 2010, followed by several release candidates. The final version of Eclipse 3.6 is expected to be released on the 23rd of June, 2010.

The second milestone for Eclipse 3.6 features a new Installation History page that allows users to compare two different installation history configurations, spell checking in the Table of Contents and Context Help editors and support for communicating with NT LAN Manager proxies (NTLMv2). The release also includes a new Equinox Weaving feature that provides a general infrastructure for load-time byte code weaving for the Equinox OSGi runtime and includes a weaver for AspectJ to load-time weave aspects into bundles.

The Helios development of version 3.6 of Eclipse is taking place at the same time as development for Eclipse 4 (E4). Eclipse 4 will be the "next generation" of the Java development environment that will incorporate several familiar web technologies and reportedly put them to new uses. The latest development release of Eclipse 4, version 0.9, was released at the end of July.
