Google books logo Google have announced that the more than a million public domain books in Google Books are now available in the open EPUB standard. In a posting on the Inside Google Books blog, product manager Brandon Badger, said that EPub was being added to the existing plain text and PDF download options. Badger says this will make the books more accessible on phones, netbooks and e-ink readers where PDF versions aren't easily and readably rendered. The EPub format allows reader software to reflow the text for smaller screens and adjust the layout as appropriate for the devices capabilities.

Google's support of EPub comes shortly after Sony's announcement that it was switching to EPub for its own publishing, albeit using DRM protection. The EPub specification was originally released in 2007 to supersede the Open eBook standard and is managed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF).
