Sony have announced that it is to stop using its own proprietary format for eBook publishing and switch to using the ePub open standard. The Sony eBook readers can already handle the ePub format but Sony have only sold eBooks in their own format. The move, seen as a response to the success of the Amazon and its Kindle reader in the US, will see Sony move to the format by the end of 2009.

Steve Haber, president of Sony's digital reading business division, said that the move will allow Sony to make their eBook store compatible with multiple devices. The change will not mean that there will be no DRM on ePub format eBooks; The specification allows for DRM protection of files and Sony will be using Adobe's Content Server 4 (ACS4).
