GNOME logo In a post on the GNOME mailing list, Ubuntu developer Jeremy Bicha started a discussion about the naming of an Ubuntu variant that will use GNOME as its default desktop. The need for a new GNOME derivative of Ubuntu was first discussed in May by several developers at the Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) in California, where the group found that the traditional naming conventions for alternative flavours of Ubuntu could cause some confusion. Although discussed at UDS, the effort is not supported by Canonical.

Simply naming it "Gubuntu", for example, could cause it to be mistaken for the Goobuntu distribution, which is used internally at Google. Because of this, the team have proposed the name "GNObuntu". Bicha says that they wanted to run the suggested name past the community in order to avoid any problems or conflicts that could force the project to rename the distribution at a later date. However, Bicha gave no indication as to when a "relatively pure" GNOME version of Ubuntu is expected to be released.

Meanwhile, the GNOME project is celebrating its 15th birthday and has created a new "Happy Birthday GNOME" web site that takes a look back at the development of the project. The site also includes an OVA disk imageDirect download that users can download to try out one of the early releases of GNOME, GNOME 1.4, in a virtual machine so they can see how far the environment has come.
