A recently added proposal on the Fedora project's wiki suggests using Cinnamon, rather than GNOME 3, as the default desktop interface for Fedora 19, the version of the Linux distribution that is scheduled to arrive in late May. The proposal will probably spark a variety of discussions, but is unlikely to be successful: GNOME has always been the Fedora project's main desktop interface, and Fedora sponsor Red Hat employs several GNOME developers; despite repeated criticism regarding GNOME 3, there have been no serious indicators of an impending paradigm shift within the Fedora project.

As is often the case with community projects, anyone can make suggestions regarding the distribution's ongoing development. The proposal to switch to Cinnamon was made by Eric Smith – who is one of the Fedora project's hundreds of package maintainers – on the Fedora developers' main discussion mailing list, however, he has recently only rarely made an appearance. The proposal is now at a stage where it will be checked by a Fedora developer who handles such "feature" suggestions. If the proposed feature is complete, the "feature wrangler" will initiate a discussion on the Fedora developers' mailing list; a week later at the earliest, the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo), which is responsible for the distribution's technical development, will decide on the proposal.

The committee has already approved a number of major changes for Fedora 19 that were submitted by members of the community, for example the switch to PHP 5.5, improvements that affect the resolution of network names, the implementation of the GCC 4.8, which is currently still in development, and the integration of the Enlightenment desktop (E17). A whole range of other features such as switching from MySQL to MariaDB and the integration of Syslinux as a Grub 2 alternative are currently being discussed.

Numerous further features are due to be discussed.
