Canonical, the commercial entity behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has announced the release of an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) image of Ubuntu Server for ARM architecture. The image, which runs using a software-based ARM emulation on Amazon's Intel based cloud, was originally designed for internal testing and has now been made publicly available for developers who want to experiment with software running under Ubuntu on ARM servers. It enables users to quickly set up a completely configured instance of Ubuntu ARM Server in Amazon's cloud.

The Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is fully functional and should behave exactly like a bare metal installation of the Ubuntu Server ARM version, but some performance overhead from the emulation is to be expected and it is primarily designed for testing and evaluation, not as a production platform. To install the image, users will need an Amazon Web Services account and due to memory requirements, the image needs an m1.large instance. Users can install it by searching for the AMI ID "ami-aef328c7". The image will be updated in the future, and the wiki page for the ARM version of Ubuntu server tracking the AMI ID will be updated as the image is revised.

Canonical has been pushing ARM development for Ubuntu recently, with server manufacturer Calxeda showing prototype hardware with multiple ARM-based SoCs at the latest Ubuntu Developer Summit. More information about Ubuntu Server on ARM is available on the Ubuntu wiki.
