Ubuntu Logo IBM and Canonical, founder and sponsor of the Ubuntu project, have announced the release of a new virtual appliance of IBM’s DB2 Express-C database software running on the Ubuntu cloud platform. Discussing the announcement, Canonical VP of Commercial Services Neil Levine said, “A virtual cloud appliance consisting of Ubuntu and DB2 Express-C will enable customers to quickly and easily set up DB2 in both public and private cloud situations,” adding that, “The full commercial support of DB2 running on Ubuntu and physical servers is also attractive to customers as a protection to their investment.”

DB2 Express-C, the free community edition of IBM's DB2 software, will run on the latest 10.04 Long Term Support (LTS) edition of Ubuntu on Canonical’s Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC). According to Canonical, its aimed at small businesses and multi-branch companies, as well as developers and business partners.
