Canonical, the founder and sponsor of the Ubuntu project, has announced the availability of a dedicated, local version of its Landscape systems management and monitoring server for Ubuntu. Until now the Landscape service was only being offered as a Software as a Service (Saas) solution in the cloud hosted on Canonical's servers. Now the Landscape Dedicated Server is available as a software appliance and can run on its own hardware, installed on-site. The Landscape Dedicated Server (LDS) can host and manage information on the local network as well as on Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).

LDS automates routine kernel and package updates through private or Ubuntu public repositories and can be configured to manage systems on a network with limited or no access to the public Internet. Ken Drachnik, Landscape manager at Canonical said “System Administrators’ jobs are hectic enough. Landscape reduces errors associated with routine updates by automating the management of Ubuntu systems – freeing up time to work on more important tasks”.

Landscape Dedicated Server will launch at the end of September for $8,000 (£4,730). Each machine (node) will cost $150 annually and will require a support contract. The Landscape client is available under the GPLv2 open source license, however, the server is a proprietary product. More details about Landscape can be found in the online Landscape brochurePDF.
