The latest beta release of the Camino web browser for Mac now includes built-in phishing protection. Like its sister project at Mozilla, Firefox, Camino 2.0 Beta 4 integrates Google's Safebrowsing solution, in which the browser checks browsed URLs against a regularly updated local blacklist; Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome do the same. As previously reported, the new function turned up in the latest Nightly Builds four weeks ago. In addition, the current beta version better matches the look and feel of Mac OS X 10.5 or later; version 10.4 or later is required.

No date has been announced for the release of the final version 2.0 of the Camino browser, which developers have been working on for a year; the latest stable release is version 1.6.9. Camino 2 will include a number of changes, such as tab previews, zoom, better keyboard controls, a Flash blocker and compatibility with AppleScript.

The Camino project is almost as old as Firefox and also uses its Gecko rendering engine, currently version 1.9.0. The main difference is that the user interface based on Cocoa instead of on XUL to better tailor Camino exclusively to the Mac operating system. Camino's project lead Mike Pinkerton works at Google, where he works on the Mac port of Chrome; his predecessor Dave Hyatt created Camino (then known as Chimera) and is one of the lead Apple developers for the Safari web browser and WebKit framework.

More details about the release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release notes. Camino is available to download from the project's Camino Preview page. Camino is released under the MPL/LGPL/GPL tri-license.
