Just over one month after the release of the fourth beta, Mozilla has released the first release candidate (RC1) for its Camino 2 web browser for Mac. Camino 2.0 RC1 will be the final preview of what will become Camino 2. The developers are asking users to test the release to make sure that "no critical problems remain before the final release". If no critical issues are found, this version will become Camino 2.0.

The Camino project is almost as old as Firefox and also uses its Gecko rendering engine. The main difference is that the user interface based on Cocoa instead of on XUL to better tailor Camino exclusively to the Mac operating system.

Camino 2 will include a number of changes, such as tab previews, zoom, better keyboard controls, a Flash blocker and compatibility with AppleScript. The latest Beta 4 release integrated phishing protection using the Google Safe Browsing solution, in which the browser checks browsed URLs against a regularly updated local blacklist.

More details about Camino 2.0 can be found in the preliminary release notes. Users currently running one of the Camino 2.0 beta releases can update to the RC1 release by selecting "Camino" from the file menu, then "Check for updates". At the time of this post, however, the Camino preview page still states Beta 4 as being the most recent release.

The latest stable release of Camino is version 1.6.10 from the end of September. Camino is released under the MPL/LGPL/GPL tri-license. A final release date for Camino 2 has yet to be announced.
