OASIS (The Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) has approved version 1.0 of the CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services) standard. The specification, already implemented, either in draft or final form in a number of open source and commercial content management systems, will allow developers to create applications which work with all CMIS implementing content management systems, without the need to pay license fees or be locked into a vendor-specific API. CMIS exposes the functionality of a content management system as a set of SOAP or REST based APIs which applications can query.

The approval of the standard was announced by Mary McRae, Director of Standards Development at OASIS, who congratulated the CMIS Technical Committee and the "community of implementers, developers and users who have brought the work successfully to culmination". The Technical Committee includes companies such as Adobe, IBM, Microsoft, Nuxeo, Oracle, Day Software and Alfresco.

Open source vendor Alfresco has already released Alfresco Community 3.3 which supports CMIS version 1.0, complete with a number of extensions which they hope to see supported in CMIS 2.0. The CMIS 1.0 specification is available to download as a PDF documentPDF, HTML document or Microsoft Word document.
