Alfresco and Joomlatools have jointly presented an interface based around the CMIS standard (Content Management Interoperability Services). The integration module called Alfresco:Joomla! uses the REST API version of CMIS. It is designed to give the users of web pages created with the Joomla Content Management System (CMS) access to Alfresco's free content management repository.

Using the Alfresco repository, Joomla users can add management, preview and tracking functionality to Joomla-based web pages – with an eye to improving security, compliance and auditing. Alfresco users, in turn, can use the interface to directly edit content on Joomla sites. The integration code is also available to download at JoomlaTools.

The CMIS standard is currently still a draft specification. It is defined by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) standardisation body and sets out to provide a REST or web service-based programming interface for creating content and social computing applications according to the "write once, run anywhere" principle. Alfresco published a first CMIS draft implementation in September 2008 and has set up a CMIS forum for interested users and developers. Alfresco recently made a CMIS developer toolbox available to help with CMIS adoption.
