Amarok Logo The Amarok Project has announced the start of its 2010 fundraiser campaign, known as "Roktober". According to the developers, the funds from the event will be used to help the project pay for its servers, cover the costs of sending team members to conferences and help to create future versions of Amarok.

Thanks in part to last year's donations, over the past twelve months the project has made more than 4,000 commits, closed over 4,000 bugs and released six new versions of Amarok. Team members have created a Quick Start Guide to Amarok and attended more than 10 conferences around the world.

Those making a donation can have their names added to a special section in Amarok’s About Dialogue in each new version released within the next 12 months. Donations can be made on the project's home page by selecting one of the two donation buttons, one for PayPal and one for Google Checkout. The goal for this year's Roktober event is €5,000.

The developers also note that the next major release of the open source music player, version 2.4, is scheduled to arrive in early 2011 and will feature, for example, support for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and transcoding. Other planned features include Playdar integration, a spectrum analyser and a complete Amarok handbook.

Amarok is the de-facto open source music player for the KDE desktop. The latest stable release of Amarok is version 2.3.2, code named "Moonshine", from mid-September. Amarok is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).
