In addition to support for the new Mac App Store which allows users to purchase and install applications on their system, the update closes a variety of security holes in the operating system.

At the time of this posting, Apple's "About the Mac OS X v10.6.6 Update" knowledge base article has yet to be published. The Apple security updates page does not yet list the latest version, nor does the Apple Support Downloads site.

The 10.6.6 client update, available via the built-in Software Update function, is 114.8 MB in size. All users are advised to upgrade to the latest release as soon as possible.

Update: Apple has now made the 10.6.6 client update and the 10.6.6 combo update (1.06 GB in size) available, via its download page, for manual installation. The 10.6.6 server updates are 143.50 MB and 1.15 GB respectively (Standard / Combo).

Update (07-01-11): Apple has now posted its detailed About the Mac OS X v10.6.6 Update knowledge base article. Additionally, the company confirmed that the update addressed a "man-in-the-middle" vulnerability in PackageKit that could have been used by an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a victim's system. Further details can be found on the "About the security content of Mac OS X v10.6.6" page.
