Mac OS X Logo Apple has released Mac OS X 10.6.5, a major update that improves the operating system's stability, compatibility and security. In addition to other changes, the update addresses more than 100 security holes, some of which can be exploited to hijack a user's system. According to Apple, it's sufficient, in many cases, to simply visit a specially crafted web site.

In addition to plugging a number of holes in the operating system itself, the update includes a number of updated packages and plug-ins, such as Adobe's Flash Player plug-in – the Flash update, version 10.1.102.64, addresses a total of 55 security vulnerabilities. The update also corrects several security issues in Mac OS X, including, for example, problems with the CUPS printing service, ImageIO, the Mac OS X Kernel, AppKit, Apache, CoreGraphics, CoreText, MySQL, OpenSSL, PHP, Python, QuickTime and X11. A full list of changes and security updates can be found in the advisories below.

All users are advised to upgrade to the latest release via the built-in Software Update function as soon as possible. The 10.6.5 client update weighs in at 644.48 MB, while the 10.6.5 combo update that includes 10.6.1 to 10.6.3 comes in at 977.21 MB. The 10.6.5 Server updates are 858.02 MB and 1.12 GB respectively (Standard / Combo).

Apple has also released Security Update 2010-007 for Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard: Client - 240.74 MB, Server - 448.10 MB) that corrects several security vulnerabilities.
