In association with heise online

hS: Does that mean, do you think, that VeriSign, OATH and OpenID will gradually get closer together.

MB: In terms of where the open standards are going over the next few years, we are very interested in OpenID. We are also very interested in digital identity cards which is another standard part of the Information Card Foundation, we are board members of that as well. This is simply because, in the long term, we believe those standards will start to replace conventional passwords and we want to make sure that, when those standards really become mature, they are able to support very robust e-commerce and we don't have to have security concerns about them. Where OpenID is, in it's current incarnation, it isn't ready for prime time on high value transactions. It's great if you are doing blog posting, but if you want to transact and send money I wouldn't use OpenID yet, so that's why we joined the OpenID foundation, is to help guide the standard to the point that it is where it needs to be in the future. We do a lot of 'where is the industry going' research and try and help guide the industry where we can.

hS: Just in closing, are there any future plans to increase your security, that you can tell me about.

MB: Well I can only really give you a stock answer of - we are always looking to improve security where it's appropriate. We are always looking for solutions that will help customers. We will very likely issue more form factors for the security key over time, because, as I said earlier, this is about offering a range of solutions that satisfy a range of customers needs. Beyond that there is not much I can say.

hS: Thank you both for taking the time to speak to heise.
