openSUSE development opens up

openSUSE logo The openSUSE developers have announced that they are changing their development policies to make it easier for developers outside of Novell to contribute. The previous policies, which dated back to before openSUSE existed, required that code contributions and technical decisions were only possible by going through a Novell developer and having them include the change or back the decision.

In a mail Henne Vogelsang, developer and board member at openSUSE, says that this will change. To enable the changes, the openSUSE Factory will be split into smaller projects, such as a GNOME factory and a Kernel factory, and these components will be managed as individual projects with their own responsibilities. The openSUSE developers are currently working on creating these groups by assigning various software packages to their own factories. Vogelsang points to the SVN repository where this division of packages is taking place.
