Zarafa's new Z-Push version 2.0 supports ActiveSync 14

Following an eighteen month development period, Zarafa has released version 2.0 of its open source ActiveSync implementation Z-Push. The software now supports ActiveSync 14 and also permits full synchronisation of HTML email.

Z-Push can be used to synchronise email, contacts, calendars and tasks from Zarafa with mobile devices. The latest version allows out-of-office messages to be turned on and off from mobile devices, unsynchronised messages on the server are now searchable, and the calendar shows who has accepted and declined events on mobile devices. Newly supported devices include the Samsung Galaxy S III, running Android 4.0.3.

Administrators benefit from enhancements providing them with more information about connected devices, device types and firmware versions. Remote wipes are possible and Z-Push 2.0 can initiate full resynchronisation from the server. Accessing published directories from mobile devices also works. iOS devices should also be able to display additional calendar and contacts folders, allowing for shared public contacts and folders to be accessed from mobile devices.

The developers are particularly proud of the improved push mechanism. This uses the Zarafa server's real-time notification functionality and, according to the developers, sends changes to mobile devices immediately without affecting server load. Improved security is provided by adding support for fail2ban, which blocks IP addresses used to make repeated failed authentication attempts.
