Zarafa has announced the availability of the first release candidate (RC1) for version 6.40 of its eponymous groupware product. The community edition of the Zarafa Collaboration Platform (ZCP) has almost unrestricted functionality, but limits the number of Outlook clients served to three. Some enterprise features are only usable in the commercial version, which is scheduled for release in the spring.

The highlight of version 6.40 is an integrated full-text search using Lucene, which indexes not only text, but also email attachments, and offers near instant searching. The release also features improved performance, and updates to the the address book, keyboard shortcuts and offline synchronisation. There is now a tool for migrating directly from an Exchange Server, obviating the need to use PST files. Additionally, WebAccess includes an 'Outlook Today' type view, which was missing in the previous 6.30 release.

Zarafa is a Linux-based groupware product which offers its own WebAccess web client, IMAP/POP3 access, a CalDAV gateway and native MAPI integration with Outlook. Visually, the WebAccess client is closely based on Outlook 2003 and offers almost all the features found in Outlook Web Access. It can also be used on mobile devices such as iPhone's, BlackBerry's and ActiveSync-based devices. The target group is users who want to use Outlook, but do not wish to pay for Microsoft's Exchange Server.

Compiled RC1 packages for the community version for various Linux distributions are available to download. The community version is released under the Affero GPLv3 licence. The final release of version 6.40 is expected to be available in March of 2010.
