Yellow Dog Linux The Japanese Fixstars Corporation, which specialises in software for the Cell processor line, has announced the release of version 6.2.1 of its Yellow Dog Linux for CUDA distribution optimised for GPU computing. CUDA, an acronym for Compute Unified Device Architecture, is a parallel computing architecture developed by NVIDIA that uses GPUs to improve the performance of some types of applications.

According to Fixstars, the latest version of its Linux distribution for optimal GPU computing, based on the free CentOS 5.5 Red Hat clone, includes the 3.1 release of NVIDIA's CUDA SDK and a number of updated packages. The upgrade also integrates additional tools for CUDA developers, such as CUDA for Fortran and The Portland Group's PGI accelerator. Additionally, the LiveDVD version includes Fixstars' CUDA Plug-in for Eclipse.

More details about the release can be found in the official press release. Yellow Dog Linux for CUDA 6.2.1 is available to download as an installable or LiveDVD and documentation is provided. Existing Yellow Dog Enterprise Linux users can upgrade using the built-in Software Updater tool found in the Applications > System Tools menu.
