Cell specialist Fixstars, who recently acquired Yellow Dog developers TerraSoft, has released the new version 6.1 of Yellow Dog Linux. YDL 6.1 supports Sony's Playstation 3, Apple's PowerPC G4/G5, the YDL Powerstation and IBM's System p – JS2x, 510, 520 and 540.

Compared with the previous version 6.0, the new version offers features like IBM's Cell SDK 3.1, Firefox 3.0, and OpenOffice 2.3. On the Playstation 3, the system can for the first time use the RSX GPU's 256MB of memory as a swap partition, which should noticeably enhance the distribution's performance. In addition, the new version features an extended WLAN configuration tool and supports the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's CellSs. The distribution is based on the kernel version 2.6.27, X.org 1.4.999, and xrandr 1.2.2.

Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 is currently available to the registered owners of YDL.net enhanced accounts. A DVD version is scheduled for release in two weeks' time, and a free version to download in four weeks' time.
