XtreemOS 2.1: Linux for the Grid

The XtreemOS consortium developers have announced the release of version 2.1 of their Linux-based Grid operating system. The project, which has as its motto "Making Grid Computing Easier", is aimed at creating an open source Grid OS with native support for virtual organisations (VO) and the ability to run on a wide range of platforms, from clusters to mobiles.

In addition to a number of bug fixes and stability improvements, the update features version 1.2 of the XtreemFS replicated and distributed object-based file system and an improved installer that includes a new Xosautoconfig tool to simplify and automate installation. Other changes include the addition of Virtual Notes to provide fault tolerance for grid applications, and an updated version of XtreemOS MD (Mobile Device), which is used to integrate XtreemOS onto Internet Tablets such as Nokia's N800 and N810 devices. The developers ask users to report any issues that they encounter.

The driving force behind the XtreemOS distribution, which is based on Mandriva Linux, is the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA). XtreemOS is licensed under the GPLv2 and BSD licenses.
