The Yorba developers have released version 0.5.0 of their open source Shotwell photo manager for the GNOME desktop. In addition to the usual stability and performance improvements, this major update to the free digital photo organiser includes a number of changes and new features.

Shotwell 0.5.0 features the ability to set and shift photo exposure date and time, set photos as a users desktop background from within Shotwell and run photo import in the background. In addition to support for online publishing services like Facebook and Flickr, the latest release adds support for publishing pictures to Google's Picasa Web Albums service. Other notable changes include printing, publishing improvements and updated language support.

The developers note that Shotwell for Windows is still considered to be at an early alpha stage of development and is missing the ability to print, import from cameras and publish to Facebook, Flickr and Picasa Web. All users are advised to upgrade to the latest release.

More details about the release can be found in the release announcement. Pre-compiled binaries of Shotwell 0.5.0 are available to download for Fedora, Ubuntu and Windows. Shotwell source code and a user guide are also available. Shotwell is released under version 2.1 of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL v2.1). Shotwell is the default default photo manager in the first alpha of Fedora 13.
