WordPress logo Version 3.1 of the official WordPress for iOS mobile application has been released and brings with it a major refresh of the app's user interface (UI), both on iPhone and iPad devices. The latest update to WordPress for iOS has an all-new look with updated graphics and colours, as well as a new way to navigate through the app: the Sidebar. The developers say that, with the new Sidebar, users should be able to more quickly and easily access other areas of the app; to access the Sidebar, users can either swipe the navigation bar itself or simply tap the menu button.

In order to take advantage of the iPad's larger screen, a sliding-panel interface has been implemented that lets users view more information. These panels can be moved around and resized, and panels that are no longer needed can be removed by sliding them to the right. On the iPad, a new post preview that displays the post with formatting and images has also been added. The Quick Photo and WordPress.com Reader features that have been available in the iPhone app are now available on iPad as well.

In addition to the overhauled UI, new features such as an option for setting the post format and a new stats view have also been added. Other changes include improved support for landscape orientation, a friend finder in the WordPress.com Reader that lets users find friends via Facebook or Twitter, easier access to the Dashboard for managing plugins and widgets, and fixes for more than 150 bugs, many of which caused the application to crash.

Further information about the major update can be found in a post on the Wordpress for iOS blog. Version 3.1 of WordPress for iOS is available from the iTunes App Store and requires iOS 4.0 or later. The app supports WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress.org blogs running WordPress 3.1 or higher.

Like WordPress, WordPress for iOS is licensed under the GPLv2 or later. Users interested in contributing to the application are encouraged to do so via the WordPress for iOS project developer portal.
