WordPress logo The WordPress developers have released version 2.0 of their open source WordPress for Android mobile application. With WordPress for Android, users can post to, and edit, their WordPress blogs from an Android device.

Version 2.0 introduces a new Dashboard user interface (UI) that provides quick access to common features in the app with a single tap, as well as a comment count ribbon that displays how many unapproved comments are in a user's moderation queue.

A new Action Bar is included that allows users to quickly switch between blogs, refresh content or launch the dashboard. An improved post editor offers users more control over their posts with the addition of a formatting toolbar above the keyboard, and more images and other media content options.

Additionally, support for Android tablets such as the Motorola Xoom or ASUS EEE Pad Transformer is now included. When viewing Posts, Pages and Comments, the tablet interface displays a scrolling list of items on the left side, with a detailed view on the right. The developers say that other areas of the app, such as the post editor and stats view, have also been optimised for tablets.

Further information about this update, including a short video, can be found in a post on the WordPress for Android blog. Version 2.0 of WordPress for Android is available to download from the Android Market for Android 2.1 or Later; it supports both WordPress.com and self-hosted blogs, requiring WordPress 3.0 or later. Existing users can update to the latest version using the Android Market's built-in update feature. Like WordPress, WordPress for Android is released under the GPL.
