Webkit gets an A in Acid3 test

Webkit, the open source browser engine has passed the final part of the Acid 3 browser test. In a posting on the Surfin' Safari blog, its developers pointed out that Webkit had previously achieved "100/100" in the Acid 3 test, for the rendering part of the HTML/CSS/JavaScript obstacle course, but had failed to get an "A" in the smooth animation tests. The latest builds of Webkit incorporate the new SquirrelFish Extreme JavaScript engine, and Webkit's Javascript execution is now fast enough to pass that smooth animation test.

The Acid 3 test is the latest of the Acid browser test series, which aims to test browser implementations' conformance to the many standards that are required, such as HTML, ECMAScript, DOM, SVG and XML. The improvements in Webkit will become apparent in future releases of projects which use Webkit, such as Apple's Safari browser, the Nokia web browser and Adobe's AIR. Google's Chrome also uses Webkit, but has its own V8 JavaScript engine. Currently the Acid 3 passing version of Webkit is only available to download on the nightly build page of Webkit.org.
