According to Netcraft's January 2012 survey of online servers and the software they use, the popular open source nginx web server has gained significant market share and overtaken Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Server) – but only by a small margin. The researchers at Netcraft found that nginx is now used on 22.2 million of the more than 160 million active web sites.

The Apache web server continues to enjoy a very comfortable lead, being used on almost 58% of all active sites – down nearly 0.3% compared to the previous month and accounting for almost 106 million sites in total. Nginx also gained market share across the 900,000 most active web sites, but its 8.5% share is still well below the 15% achieved by Microsoft's IIS; here, the Apache server holds a share of 64%.

The company compiled its results from nearly 583 million web sites – almost 5% more than in last month's survey.
