SpringSource, the open source Java division of VMWare, has announced that the company has acquired UK based Rabbit Technologies, makers of the open source, AMQP implementing, RabbitMQ messaging system. Rod Johnson, general manager of SpringSource commented "SpringSource can extend it's emerging application platform with another element of technology that is critical to modern virtual and cloud deployment models". RabbitMQ is a popular enterprise messaging system which is implements on the AMQP open standard wire protocol for enterprise messaging. SpringSource plan to integrate RabbitMQ with Spring and Grails as a first class API.

An FAQ on the acquisition says that the company plans to use RabbitMQ as an integral part of future offerings. RabbitMQ will remain open source, and SpringSource say that it will be increasing the investment in the technology, which should result in significant improvements in RabbitMQ open source releases in the future. SpringSource assures customers that this acquisition will not affect the company's support of other messaging brokers such as Apache ActiveMQ. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
