Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has announced that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Long Term Support) will be named "Precise Pangolin". Shuttleworth's inspiration came when he "recently spent a few hours tracking a pangolin through the Kalahari", and noted their precision and toughness. Many alternative suggestions including "Perky Penguin" and "Porangi Packhorse" were rejected for a variety of carefully considered reasons.

As a long-term support release, 12.04 is planned to be "tough and long-lasting, reliable, solid as a rock and well defended", and will be the second major release of Ubuntu featuring the Unity desktop environment. Shuttleworth said that 12.04 will be the first LTS release that supports "both the cloud guest, and cloud infrastructure, across ARM and x86 architectures."

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is due for release in April 2012, and will feature extended support: three years for desktops and five years for the server version. The final release of Ubuntu 11.10, "Oneiric Ocelot", is due on 13 October.
