Ubuntu logo Ubuntu Release Manager Kate Stewart has announced that version 10.10 of Canonical's Ubuntu Linux distribution known as "Maverick Meerkat" has reached its end of life. This means that, from 10 April 2012 (yesterday), no new updates, including security updates and critical fixes, will be made available.

Released in October 2010, Ubuntu 10.10 was based on the 2.6.35 Linux kernel, and included version 2.32.0 of the GNOME desktop environment and a new installer with support for installing to the Btrfs file system. Maverick Meerkat users are advised to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" or later to continue receiving updates.

The current stable release of Ubuntu is 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot", while the current Long Term Support (LTS) version is Ubuntu 10.04.4 "Lucid Lynx". For users that want to upgrade to 10.10 to 11.10, the developers note that upgrading is only supported in multiple steps; this means that these users must first upgrade to 11.04 and then to 11.10. The project's next major release, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin", is currently in development and is scheduled to arrive on 26 April.
