Ubuntu Logo Rick Spencer, Engineering Manager for the Ubuntu Desktop team, has announced that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, the next major release of Ubuntu, code-named Lucid Lynx, will feature Yahoo! as its default search engine. The announcement came in the form of a post on the Ubuntu development mailing list in which Spencer confirmed that Canonical, founder and sponsor of the Ubuntu project, had reached a revenue sharing deal with with Yahoo!. Spencer says that the "revenue will help Canonical to provide developers and resources to continue the open development of Ubuntu and the Ubuntu Platform".

The revenue deal means that with Lucid, instead of Google, Yahoo! will be the default search provider for the Firefox start page and the top right tool bar. Spencer notes that the default home page will respect a users search providers settings and that users will be able to easily switch between Google and Yahoo!. Other search providers options have yet to be confirmed. The change will reportedly take place "as soon as reasonably possible". The specific terms of the revenue sharing deal have not been disclosed. Yahoo! is currently waiting for regulatory approval on its deal with Microsoft.
