Zoom The Gentoo-based live system includes tools for administering or repairing an operating system and recovering data after a system crash
The latest 2.8.1 release of SystemRescueCd upgrades a number of the live system's bundled tools as well as its underlying components, such as the GRUB bootloader. The Gentoo-based GPLv2-licensed distribution for administering and repairing systems includes the recent stable GRUB 2.00 bootloader release and updates the standard long-term kernel to Linux 3.2.23; the alternative kernel is now at version 3.4.5.

SystemRescueCd 4.8.1 features version 4.10 of the lightweight Xfce desktop environment and uses X Server 1.12.3, the current stable release from earlier this month. The built-in partitioning tools have also been updated: the Gnome PARTition EDitor (GParted) and Partclone partition image utility have been upgraded to versions 0.13.0 and 0.2.49 respectively. The developers have removed the floppy disk image for the Ranish partition manager and added version 0.7.8 of the SpaceFM file manager (0.7.9 arrived at the end of last week). Version 2.02.93 of the LVM2 userspace toolset and the 1.42.4 release of the e2fsprogs filesystem utilities are among the distribution's other package updates.

Further details can be found in the change log. Hosted on SourceForge, SystemRescueCd 2.8.1 can be downloaded as a 382MB ISO image file from the project's site. For new users, a quick start guide and online manual are provided.
