Sugar Labs joins the Software Freedom Conservancy

Sugar Labs, the company behind the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) desktop Sugar, have joined the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC). The SFC was founded as an initiative of the Software Freedom Law Centre, to act as a fiscal sponsor of free and open source software (FOSS) providing free financial and administrative services. This means that the Conservancy administers donations to projects and member projects benefit from being under the umbrella of a tax-free organisation.

The Sugar project became independent of the OLPC in May this year. Since that time, Sugar has been ported to Linux and seen the creation of "Sugar on a Stick", a live USB image of Sugar for children to use. Other projects under the umbrella of the Conservancy include the BusyBox command line tools, InkScape vector graphics application, Mercurial revision control system and the Samba SMB/CIFS file sharing.
