SpringSource Spring Framework Co-founder Juergen Hoeller has announced the availability of the first release candidate (RC1) for version 3.0 of the open source Spring framework for Java applications. Spring 3.0 RC1 completes the key Spring 3.0 feature set and is now fully Java 5 based, even though Spring 2.5 currently supports several of the higher-level functionalities built on Java 5.

The RC1 features early support for the JSR-330 specification for Dependency Injection in Java and for JSR-303 Bean validation. Additionally, the release includes support for client-side representational state transfer (REST) and early support for Java EE 6 and the Spring expression language (SpEL). SpEL is a core expression parser for use in bean definitions. Hoeller notes that the development team is also considering "several minor enhancements" for the upcoming RC2 release.

Spring 3.0 RC1 is available to download and requires Java 5 or above. Spring is licensed under the Apache Licence 2.0. The second release candidate is expected to be released in mid-October and will primarily focus on "compatibility improvements as well as on runtime optimisations".
