Spring Roo to be up to 10 times faster and without GPL

The upcoming version 1.2 of development environment Spring Roo will implement a wide range of suggestions from the community. Flexible repository layers and service layers are now supported, and MongoDB (version 2 was recently released) can be used as the database. The Roo codebase has moved to GitHub. The developer team provides a glimpse of what is to come in the announcement of milestone release Roo 1.2.0.M1.

SpringSource promises that version 1.2.0 of Roo will provide much better performance. In particular, large projects will benefit from optimised profiling, the disk I/O, and XML models; in benchmarks, they could improve by a factor of 10.

A completely different change concerns the licensing for Spring Roo. Up until now, a large part of the code has been under GPLv3, which is controversial among some members of the community; annotations and associated code are under a mixture of GPLv3 and Apache Software Licence version 2 (ASLv2). In the future, Spring Roo will completely be under ASLv2 in order to make the development environment more interesting for commercial projects as well.

Additional new functions will be integrated before the release of Roo 1.2.0. For example, work is being done on integrating JSF/PrimeFaces and on support for multi-module Maven projects.
