Songbird 1.9 nears with 'blessed build'

Leading up to the next stable update, the Songbird development team has issued version 1.9.1 of its open source media player. According to the developers, version 1.9 of Songbird is nearly ready for a full public release, but they note that they're "not *quite* there yet, though, as there are a few more tweaks and fixes we’d like to make".

Aimed at users that want to try out the new version before the final release, Songbird 1.9.1 features the addition of a Play Queue, allowing users to create and manage a queue of music, and updates to the built-in 7digital store with music recommendations. Other changes include improved CD ripping on Mac OS X and a variety of performance improvements making the application more responsive.

The developers also note that, while "not technically a beta", users may be required to manually upgrade when the full version is released. Users testing the preview version are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

Songbird is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv2). The latest stable release is version 1.8.0 from early September 2010.
