Songbird Logo Nearly two months after the 'blessed build' development preview arrived, the Songbird development team has released version 1.9.3 of its open source media player. According to the developers, the first stable release of the 1.9 branch of Songbird includes a number of performance improvements for users with large libraries and introduces several new features.

Songbird 1.9.3 features updates to the built-in 7digital store with music recommendations and the addition of a Play Queue allowing users to create and manage a queue of music. On Mac OS X, users can now rip CDs directly into Songbird – existing Songbird installations will be notified of the new add-on during the update process. Performance improvements have also been made to searching and filtering, as well as metadata editing when changing several files simultaneously.

More details about the latest major update can be found in a post on the Songbird blog and in the release notes. Songbird 1.9.3 is available to download for Windows XP or later and Mac OS X 10.5 or later. Songbird is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv2).
