Skype publishes SkypeKit SDK for Windows & Mac

Just three weeks after the beta for Linux systems was released, communications service Skype has published Windows and Mac OS X versions of its SkypeKit software development kit beta. Discussing the release in a post on the Skype Developers Blog, Skype Platform Business Unit General Manager Jonathan Christensen said that, "To date, we’ve received thousands of SkypeKit beta requests from forward-thinking manufacturers and software makers, and we hope they will build many new innovative devices and applications using SkypeKit."

Also referred to as "headless Skype ", SkypeKit does not require the Skype client. The SDK includes APIs for voice and video support, instant messaging, and Skype's "Super Wideband Audio Codec" (SILK). In its first stage, the kit is apparently tailored to the needs of device manufacturers. Over the course of the year, however, another version compatible with desktop and web applications is to be released.

More details about SkypeKit for Mac and Windows (x86) can be found on the Skype Developer portal. Users with a valid Skype login that are interested in joining the SkypeKit Beta program can request an invitation on the developer site. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised.
