Scientific Linux 5.8 released
The Scientific Linux (SL) project developers have announced that version 5.8 of their Linux distribution is available to download. As usual, the distribution is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) that carries the same version number; therefore, SL 5.8 includes all the new features that were introduced with RHEL 5.8, which was released two months ago. Aside from bug fixes and hardware support improvements, additions include new features in the virtualisation and power management areas. The release notes explain some differences compared to the original.
Scientific Linux 5.8 is the last RHEL 5.8 clone to be released by one of the three most popular projects that build free RHEL clones: CentOS and Oracle released their clones about two weeks after the release of RHEL 5.8. RHEL is available on a subscription basis and is maintained for a period of ten to thirteen years.
