TYPO3 logo Version 4.7 of the open source TYPO3 content management system (CMS) has been released. According to its developers, the update, which focuses on standards compliance and accessibility, continues to improve HTML5 support, but will be the last release to the 4.x branch as they shift their focus to developing version 6.0.

In TYPO3 4.7, the Rich Text Editor (RTE) has been optimised for HTML5, and support for the HTML5 video and audio standards has been added. A new dedicated Government Package includes a collection of best practices to improve web site accessibility, making sites work better with screen readers and keyboard navigation. Initially, the package is only available in German but an English version is "already being planned".

Other changes include the addition of new hooks and TCA-options, more flexible cache handling and various performance improvements that make it "much faster" compared to previous releases. The switch to using UTF-8 encoding, which began in version 4.5, has also been completed.

More details about the update can be found in the general release notes, the technical release notes and in the change log. TYPO3 4.7.0 is available to download from the project's site; upgrade and installation instructions are provided. TYPO3 is licensed under the GPL.
