At this years SAP TechEd 2009 event in Vienna, SAP announced that it has joined a number of Apache Software Foundation projects. The goal of the move is to integrate some of the software into future releases of its NetWeaver Application Server component. "This is a great step forward. We are highly enthusiastic about further extending our reach into the community." said Hervé Couturier, executive vice president of Technology Development at SAP.

The current list of projects that SAP intends to contribute to include the Maven management and comprehension tool, the Tomcat Servlet container, the OpenEJB Enterprise JavaBeans implementation and ActiveMQ. In recent months, SAP has increased its involvement in open source. For example, in June of this year, the software manufacturer announced that it would take a more active leadership role in the Eclipse Foundation.
