In a post on its homepage, the Rosegarden project has announced the release of version 12.04 of its open source audio and MIDI sequencer, code-named "Freedom".

According to its developers, the most notable change in the new version of the software for music composition and editing is one that they hope will be "completely transparent" to users: automatic MIDI channel allocation. Now, instead of having a fixed relationship between, for example, instruments and channels, the instruments "float by default, and grab channels on an as-needed basis".

In Rosegarden 12.04, "certain aspects" of the track editor have been extensively reworked to improve overall performance and reliability. The developers have also worked on cleaning up Rosegarden's code and commenting. Other changes include better handling of tempo ramps, ornaments and repeated segments during MIDI export, as well as fixes for various bugs, including some that could cause the application to crash.

More details about the new version can be found in the release notes. Download and installation instructions for various distributions, as well as hardware and system requirements, are provided on the project's site. Hosted on SourceForge, Rosegarden binaries and source code are licensed under the GPLv2.
