RAVE logo The Apache Software Foundation has announced that Apache Rave has completed its incubation and is now a top level project at the Foundation. Apache Rave is a web and social mashup engine which offers a lightweight Java platform for hosting and aggregating OpenSocial gadgets, W3C Widgets and services.

Graduation from incubation means that the project now meets the standards for management, governance and code quality required by the Apache Software Foundation, standards that are often called "The Apache Way". Rave was one of four projects which the Apache board voted to graduate earlier this month. The other three are Sqoop, a bulk data transfer tool for Hadoop, Lucy, a C-based full text search engine, and Accumulo, a distributed key/value store built on top of Apache Hadoop, Zookeeper and Thrift.

Vice President of Apache Rave and Lead Software Engineer at The MITRE Corporation, Matthew B Franklin explained the need for the Rave platform, saying, "Internet social platforms, such as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter have shaped the expectations of today's users; creating an onslaught of demand for pervasive social integration within both consumer and enterprise applications". He noted that this meant developers are faced with having to deliver "low-cost, scalable, modularized applications with deep-rooted social capabilities", and Apache Rave is an open source project chartered to provide a platform for delivering those applications.

Code for Apache Rave has been donated by the MITRE Corporation, Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute, SURFnet, OSS Watch, CMS vendor Hippo and many individuals, and pulls together the efforts of several independent open source projects with similar goals into one platform. The platform is also designed to take care of personalisation of social gadgetry and collaboration through those social gadgets. It also includes support for OAuth authentication, pluggable persistence and security model and is said to have a simple model for integrating with other platforms and services.

Apache Rave entered the incubator in March 2011 and has graduated in a year. Apache Rave has yet to produce it's first 1.0 release; it's most recent release was 0.9-incubating, released on 20 March.
