The new version 2.0 of Apache Shindig, an open source reference implementation of an OpenSocial container for Java and PHP sponsored by the Apache Software Foundation, now supports the two most recent versions of the OpenSocial API (0,9, parts of 1.0). Other improvements include support for OpenSocial templates, a "lightweight" JavaScript API (OSAPI), and the implementation of the "OpenSocial Virtual Currency and Payments" and "OpenSocial Groups" features.

OpenSocial defines APIs for social networks, allowing users to enhance their profile pages with readily available, as well as custom-made, applications. The generic interface allows the apps to run on all platforms that support OpenSocial. With the exception of Facebook, most other social networks including MySpace, LinkedIn, the VZ Group, Yahoo and Xing have joined Apache in their initiative to develop OpenSocial implementations.

Apache Shindig 2.0 is available to download and is licensed under the Apache 2.0 licence. An overview of the project explains Shindig's history and how it implements the OpenSocial specification.
