PyPy 1.2 ships with JIT compiler for Python
The PyPy developers have announced the release of version 1.2 of their Python runtime environment, PyPy. This is the first release to ship with a Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler, although the developers do note that it should be considered beta software as it only supports 32 bit x86 platforms and is still "memory-hungry". However the JIT is stable and the developers say it is "known to be faster than CPython (and Unladen Swallow) on some real world applications". The release incorporates a number of interpreter optimisations for better performance and leaner memory use.
The developers have announced a new PyPy.org website, a service that monitors PyPy's nightly performance and the future availability of Ubuntu packages in a PyPy PPA . Binaries of PyPy for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows can be obtained from the download page and the MIT licensed source code is also available.
