Puppet Labs Logo Puppet Labs, the company behind the open source Puppet configuration management tool, has announced the "release" of version 2.0 of its commercial Puppet Enterprise product. Puppet Enterprise 2.0 (PE 2.0), which will be generally available on 21 October, is a major update with several new features and a new graphical user interface (GUI).

The company says that the new GUI is designed to make it easier for system administrators to use the automation tool; previously sysadmins had to learn Puppet's DSL (domain specific language) and issue commands over Puppet's command-line interface. New provisioning capabilities have also been added to make it simpler for admins to quickly scale infrastructure using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), or VMware in their own data centres.

With the new compliance functionality, administrators can monitor and enforce policies. The orchestration capability also allows them to query their infrastructure to find vulnerable nodes and schedule simultaneous updates using a single command. Further information about the release can be found in a post on the Puppet Blog and on the Puppet Enterprise 2.0 web page. A feature comparison chart between Puppet and Puppet Enterprise is provided on the company's site.

Version 2.0 of Puppet Enterprise will be generally available on 21 October; users can register to receive an email with download information when it becomes available. PE 2.0 can be used to manage up to 10 nodes free of charge, while pricing for up to 25 nodes starts at $1,995.
