Simon Phipps, recently elected member of the board of the Open Source Initiative, has announced he has been asked by the board to create a group to develop a new member-led governance charter for the organisation. In a blog posting Phipps said "Change is now inevitable because the board recently passed rules imposing term limits to make room for new blood" adding that "A significant number of long-term Board members retire this year and the next. So it's vital a plan for OSI's future be devised".

Phipps feels that the OSI should sustain it's current licence review activities, but widen it's scope to address issues such as open data and open cloud computing and consumer awareness of open source and the four freedoms. He also sees a role for the OSI in "dealing with the open engagement of corporations such as Microsoft, IBM, Google, Oracle and SAP" and wants to see expanded resources to help governments and NGOs adopt open source.

The governance charter work is being based upon earlier discussions hosted by the OSI last year, but Phipps is looking for "smart, informed people with a heart for software freedom" to be involved in the development of the draft and details. Interested parties should contact him at "webmink at opensource dot org" or get in touch with the OSI board. He is also inviting people with experience in "writing charters, administering servers, web design, trademark policy or any other aspect of the renewal of OSI" to contact him at the same email address.
