After two years of development by over two hundred authors and committers the Perl developers have released Perl 5.12.0, the latest version of the Perl language. Among the features added to the core language is support for version numbers on package imports, a new ... operator for representing unimplemented code nicknamed the "Yada Yada Operator" and pluggable keywords to allow developers to extend the Perl language.

The 5.12.0 release sees Perl updated to Unicode 5.2 and improvements made overall to Unicode handling. Thinking ahead, the Perl developers have made the time functions Y2038 compliant. The release notes cover all the details of the changes including incompatible changes which developers should bear in mind when upgrading. Perl 5.12.0 also now warns users about their use of deprecated features by default.

The release of Perl 5.12.0 also marks a switch by the developers, to a new time based release process. In future there will be a new stable version of Perl released each spring, followed by a bug fix release one month later, and quarterly maintenance updates after that. These maintenance releases will contain fixes, but in contrast to the annual Perl releases, will contain no new features.

Update: Binary versions of Perl 5.12.0 are now available for Unix, Linux, Mac OS X and Windows from perl.org and ActiveState. The source code is also available to download.
