PC-BSD 8.2 "Hubble Edition" released
Following three release candidates, the PC-BSD project developers have announced the release of version 8.2 of their BSD open source operating system for desktops. According to the developers, the second point update to PC-BSD 8.0 includes a variety of enhancements, improvements and new features over PC-BSD 8.1, which was released in mid-July of 2010.
Based on FreeBSD 8.2, PC-BSD 8.2 includes minimum password complexity requirements to access user accounts and to control encryption, and features version 4.5.5 of the KDE desktop, a stabilisation and maintenance update to KDE 4.5 – KDE SC 4.6 was released on 26 January. Additionally, network support for the HP Linux InkJet Driver Project (HPLIP) is enabled by default. Other changes in the final version include the addition of the ability to select file-system type and encryption during auto-partitioning, an option to toggle between MBR/GPT partitioning, plus various fixes for the wireless / network managers. Packages include Firefox 3.6.13, VLC 1.1.5, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 and Thunderbird 3.1.7.
Additional information about this final release can be found in the release notes and in the change log – a screenshot tour is provided by thecodingstudio.com. PC-BSD 8.2 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems from one of the project's mirrors. PC-BSD is released under the BSD license and development is sponsored by iXsystems.
